Detourism

Detourism is a new project of the City of Venice for a different style of journey, an invitation to discover the original, unusual and secret Venice, for curious travellers who love deviations from the usual paths.

WHY 'DETOURISM’?

  • Because Venice is the perfect city in which to lose oneself.

  • To experience Venice as the Venetians do.

  • To discover another Venice.

  • Become a detourist, discover what the guidebooks don’t tell you, leave the beaten track and experience unexpected encounters.

The idea of DETOURISM is to invite guests to the lagoon to put themselves in the shoes of the local people; not to be a tourist but to travel the city slowly and with love, to get lost in search of a more authentic and lesser-known Venice.

We would like to tell you about this “other” Venice through the columns of the online magazine, the weekly newsletter with its events and art exhibitions, and a special series of thematic maps of the city and its lagoon.

The first published map is called “Fuorirotta” (“Off-course” i.e. “Detour”): an alternative map of Venice; a guide for responsible and ethical travel in the lagoon.

See the 2014 Fuorirotta map here:

Be inspired by our travel tips, and discover the Venice you weren’t expecting with Detourism Venezia Magazine, to download and browse online.

Sign up for the Detourism newsletter: new ideas and advice every week for visiting an art exhibition or participating in an unusual event, giving you the possibility of a random detour, often just as fascinating as your initial idea. Because you’ll really know Venice if you discover it unexpectedly; if you “lose yourself” to find your Venice.

ENJOY YOUR DETOUR!
